The focus for this week’s blog post, my pretties, is, wait for it, social media magic! Social media, is right up there in my top five tools for communications sweet stuff. Thank goodness for Facebook- it’s a quick and easy way to get your message consistently in front of your audience in order to build community and engagement. It’s pure, unadulterated no muss, no fuss marketing.
Well, it used to be… Last year, Facebook changed the way Newsfeeds work- there’s a gazillion technical, algorithm-y, conspiracy-theory-rife articles on ye olde internet that explains this in greater detail- but the biggest impact you may have noticed is that your page posts simply aren’t showing up in the News Feeds of your followers. You’re dead, Willie*. Or you may as well be.
The number one way to get back front and centre is to cough up $ for Facebook ads (I’ll be writing about this in an upcoming post), but if you don’t have the budget or the inclination to pay for social media advertising I have five tips for you:
1- Post images and videos on Instagram and cross-post to Facebook. Simples BUT do this sparingly i.e. no more than weekly.
2- Don’t focus your posts on selling- Facebook made the changes to Newsfeeds because their audience told them they don’t like being sold to. Apparently. It has nothing to do with ad revenue.
3- Share content that has already had a fantastic response on Twitter, Instagram or LinkedIn.
4- Ask your followers to adjust their settings to enable your content to appear:
Hover their mouse beside ‘Liked’ on your page, then select ‘Posts in News Feed’, then ‘See First’. Followers can also opt to get notifications for when you post.
5- Engage, engage, engage! The more your followers engage with your content- the more they comment, share, like and click your posts- the more your organic Facebook reach increases. This means your content needs to be sharable and engaging. It doesn’t hurt to give a little prompt- on both your personal page and your business page directly ask your followers to engage with your page. Of course, as your page receives engagement, engage back. Show you are a human (and that you value support of your page) and enhance your page’s visibility by replying to comments and to posts. Here’s an example of a Facebook page I’m managing that is going great guns in terms of engagement.
A final, bonus tip- resharing is caring, baby. You see a post you like? Share it, and bask in the glow of being a share bear.
